Origin and history

The Verdeau Pass is a covered passage in Paris from the 9th arrondissement, established in 1846 by the Société du passage Jouffroy. It connects the rue de la Grange-Batelière in the south to the rue du Faubourg-Montmartre in the north, following the passages of the Panoramas and Jouffroy, forming the longest covered walk in Paris. Its architecture is distinguished by a high verrière in fish edges and a refined neoclassical style, although its remote location has long made it less frequented than its neighbours.

The passage owes its name to Jean-Baptiste Ossian Verdeau, real estate developer and shareholder of the Société du passage Jouffroy, also known for having invented a laundry rental system for hotels and furnished. Unlike the adjacent passages, the Verdeau has been able to attract a specialised clientele thanks to the close opening of the Drouot Hotel: antique dealers, antique booksellers and postcard collectors are installed, giving it a distinctive business identity.

Partially classified as Historical Monuments since 1974 (amended in 2012), the Verdeau Pass protects its facades, roofs and entrances located at 6 rue de la Grange-Batelière and 31bis rue du Faubourg-Montmartre. Despite its less prestigious status than its neighbours, it now embodies a treasure hunt for lovers of ancient objects, while preserving its 19th century architectural charm.
