The entire "Perrin Bridge" gate, and the part of the urban enclosure included in the house attached to it, to the south (cf. BE 218 (2, rue du Pont-Perrin), 219 (rue du Pont-Perrin): registration by order of 20 September 2011
Origin and history
The Porte du Pont Perrin is part of the fortified enclosure of Deols, attested in the middle of the 15th century. At that time, three gates allowed access to the city: the Clock Gate to the north, the Pre Grand Gate to the south-east, and the Perrin Bridge Gate to the south. Only the first two remain today. These works, built in the second half of the 15th century, marked the strategic entrances of the city, connected to the major traffic axes.
Prior to 1755, the Porte du Pont Perrin was used as a compulsory passage to Deols from Châteauroux, via a bridge crossing Indre. The construction of the royal road from Paris to Toulouse made this bridge obsolete, gradually insulating the door. At the end of the 18th century, the monument was reassigned to a townhouse and also housed local court hearings. Between 1796 and 1830, buildings were backed by its side façades, and a room was set up under its vault.
Despite these transformations, the Porte du Pont Perrin retains significant medieval architectural elements. It was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 September 2011, including a portion of the attenuated urban enclosure. Today owned by the commune, it bears witness to the defensive and administrative history of Deols, while illustrating the functional adaptations of fortifications over the centuries.
