Origin and history
The Hotel de Wicque, located in Pézenas in the Hérault, is an emblematic monument of the 15th and 16th centuries, mixing Renaissance and Gothic influences. Its on-street facade, typically Lyon, is distinguished by sneeze bays and the absence of traditional Languedocian fog. The windows on the second floor, adjacent to the centre, and the restored courtyard – where two 16th century medallions were once used – reveal a neat architectural ordinance. The arched vestibule of warheads, with its unidentified historiated pendant key, precedes a spiral staircase, while the interior facades have Renaissance medallions.
The courtyard, framed with four facades pierced with Renaissance windows, is home to a Gothic gallery, a 15th century span of which remains, marked by partially visible cross-sections of warheads. This span belonged to a larger structure, now extinct. The main hall held until 1885 a monumental fireplace (circa 1515), decorated with pilasters, capitals, cut leathers and coat of arms animals, transferred from the castle of Saint-Pierre to Montblanc. The origin of the Wicque name and the precise history of the hotel remain unknown to date.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 11 July 1944, the building protects its facades on street and roof, as well as the four facades on courtyard and Gothic span. Today, the Galerie de l'Hôtel de Wicque serves as an exhibition space for contemporary artists, freely accessible during the summer season. Its exact address, 9 rue de la Faire, and GPS location (estimated at 8/10) make it a central place of Pezenese heritage.
Architectural elements, such as cross bays, Renaissance medallions or the ogival vault, illustrate the transition between Gothic and Renaissance in Languedoc. The absence of a fog on the facade, a local characteristic, and the pendulum key to the enigmatic scene underline the originality of the site. Despite changes (especially in the 19th century), the Hôtel de Wicque retains a rare stylistic consistency, testifying to artistic exchanges between Lyon and the South of France at that time.
