Priory of the Monks (all) and chapel: inscription by decree of 16 January 1964
Origin and history
The Priory of the Monks is a religious building located in the commune of Mazille, in Saône-et-Loire, in the heart of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating from the 14th century, this priory embodies medieval monastic architecture, with a chapel integrated into its whole. Its designation as historic monuments, effective since 16 January 1964, underscores its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation for this period.
The priory, like many religious establishments of that time in Burgundy, played a central role in local life. In the 14th century, this region was marked by a rural economy dominated by agriculture and viticulture, while monastic communities performed spiritual, educational and sometimes charitable functions. Priories served as places of prayer, but also as centres for land management and dissemination of knowledge, reflecting the influence of the Church in medieval social organization.
The inscription of the Priory of the Monks in 1964 preserved its architecture and its history, offering today a tangible testimony of the Burgundy monastic heritage. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its precise address at Mazille (145 Chemin du Doyenne) and its status as a protected monument, without however detailing its current use (visits, accommodation, etc.), left to the discretion of local managers.
