Origin and history

The Charraud Bridge is an iconic work of art located in Crozant, in the Creuse department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the late 17th century, this arched bridge crosses the Sedelle River and is distinguished by its three arches in the middle of the wall. The architectural know-how of the period was illustrated by its triangular fore-beeks upstream and downstream trapezoidal, topped by ornamental half-balls.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 23 July 1934, the Charraud Bridge bears witness to the importance of river infrastructures in this rural area. Originally, this type of bridge facilitated local trade and freight transport, playing a key role in the economic development of Crozant and its surroundings. Today, there remains a remarkable example of the civil heritage of Limousin.

The bridge is currently owned by the Creuse department. Although the practical information about his visit is not detailed in the sources, his inscription as a historical monument guarantees his preservation. The available data, from bases such as Merimée or Structurae, confirm its architectural interest and its anchoring in the Creus landscape.
