Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Sernin de Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, located in the Aveyron department in Occitanie, is a medieval religious building whose foundations could date back to the late 14th century. Measuring 33 meters in length, it is distinguished by its eight chapels, one dedicated to the Virgin, and key vaults representing Christ blessing the four Evangelists. Some parts, such as two chapels and the porch, date back to the late 15th century, while a chapel bears witness to the Renaissance.

The church was erected as a collegiate church in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV, with a chapter composed of 12 canons, 6 pre-bounded and 2 clerics. This institution aimed to strengthen piety in the castrum of Saint-Sernin, a locality already provided with 24 priests financed by local foundations. The building, marked by successive additions, presents architectural innovations such as triangular foothills or a double key vault in Chapel A.

Ranked a historic monument in 1930, the college suffered degradation during the Revolution, including the suppression of its shields. An will of Antoine de Baderon in 1518 mentioned the foundation of a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, illustrating the involvement of local lords. Outside, a window of a chapel bears a relief dated 1646, later integrated into the masonry.

The traces of painting above the front door, reported in 1926, and the architectural modifications reflect a complex history, mixing medieval piety, renaissant adaptations and revolutionary vicissitudes. Today owned by the commune, the collegiate remains a major testimony of the religious and architectural heritage of Rouergue.
