Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Grâces : classification by decree of 6 July 1928
Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-des-Grâces chapel in Névache is an isolated monument, built in coarse blockade of rubble broken with black stone, covered with a coating except at the level of the apse. Its architecture is characterized by a unique nave oriented and a cul-de-four apse. The triumphal arch supports an arcade bell tower, while the nave was initially covered with a three-sided ceiling. These architectural elements reflect a typical construction of the Alpine religious buildings of the medieval period.
The monumental paintings that adorn the interior of the chapel are dated from the middle and second half of the 15th century. These frescoes, although partially preserved, bear witness to the artistic and spiritual importance of this place. The chapel was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 6 July 1928, highlighting its heritage value. Today, it belongs to the commune of Nevache and remains a symbol of the religious and cultural heritage of the Hautes-Alpes.
Located in an Alpine environment, the chapel illustrates the adaptation of religious constructions to the geographical and climatic constraints of the region. Local materials, such as black stone, and the construction techniques used reflect the resources and know-how available at that time. This monument offers an overview of religious and community life in the Alps in the Middle Ages, where chapels served as places of assembly and devotion for local populations.
