Origin and history

The ancient tilery of Saulx-Marchais is a historical monument whose first records date back to the early eighteenth century. However, it would have an older origin, linked to a seigneurial tilery used to maintain local properties. Today, only the remains of the oven remain, with its fireplace and cooking chamber excavated, as well as its fireplace. These elements, probably dating back to the 19th century, probably take over the structure of an older device.

The tile factory was an essential place of production for the region, providing building materials such as tiles or bricks. Its activity reflected the economic and social organization of the time, where local lords played a central role in resource and infrastructure management. The inclusion of the remains of the oven in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 2003 underscores its heritage importance.

Located at 30 rue de la Tuilerie, this former tilery is a rare testimony of the pre-industrial craft industry in Île-de-France. Although partially disappeared, its preserved structure allows us to study the techniques of cooking and the methods of production of the period. The location, noted as "passible" in databases, indicates partial preservation of the site, accessible for historical or heritage studies.
