Origin and history

The 4 Menhirs of Nant-le-Grand constitute a megalithic complex located in the territory of the commune of Nettancourt, in the Grand Est region. These erect stones, whose precise origin and function are not documented in the available sources, reflect an ancient occupation of the site, although their exact dating cannot be ascertained with certainty. Menhirs, prehistoric monuments typical of many French regions, were often associated with ritual, funeral or symbolic practices by the communities that erected them.

In the Far East, as elsewhere, these megalithic structures were generally part of a landscape marked by agro-pastoral activities and tribal or clan social organization. Their presence suggests a desire to mark the territory or to commemorate significant events for the local populations of the time.
