Origin and history
The Mas de Las Fons, located in Calce in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is an ancient castle built between the 12th and 15th centuries. It includes a Romanesque church dedicated to Sainte-Marie, dated the 12th century, as well as a fortified complex built gradually around a triangular courtyard. This set, which includes a taluté enclosure, a double porch to the west and a poterne to the east, is partly based on 11th century foundations, although profoundly redesigned over the centuries.
Cited in the 12th century as an outbuilding of the Abbey of Lagrasse, this building was developed around the chapel of Sainte-Marie. The fortifications, added between the 12th and 15th centuries, reflect the defensive needs of the period. The whole was partially inscribed in historical monuments on 29 March 1993, protecting specifically the church, the entrance porch, the enclosure and its poterne.
Today, Mas de Las Fons belongs to the municipality of Calce. Although sources mention its potential openness to visits or services such as guest rooms, no specific information is available on its current accessibility. The remains, however, demonstrate its historical importance as a religious and defensive site in the region.
