Origin and history
It is located in the municipality of Sollies-Pont (Var), the date of Protohistory. This archaeological site, characteristic of the fortified habitats of the Iron Age, dominates a strategic territory between sea and mountains. Its remains, including the remains of its enclosure, illustrate the defensive construction techniques of this time, adapted to the steep reliefs of the region.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 22 July 1969 and 22 October 1970, the Castellas specifically protects the traces of its enclosure (cadastral parks A 4 to 15). The property of the site is shared between the State and private owners. Although the sources do not specify its exact use, the protohistoric oppida generally served as refuges, commercial checkpoints or political centres for local communities.
The location of Castellas, reported with an accuracy deemed "satisfactory" (note 7/10), places the site near the eponymous cornice, between Sollies-Pont and Sollies-Toucas. This area, now integrated into the Var department, was at the time a crossroads between the Mediterranean and Alpine influences, as evidenced by the numerous oppida of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
