Origin and history

The prehistoric deposit of Saint-Germain-de-la-Rivière is a major archaeological site located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine. Dated from the Upper Paleolithic, it was identified as an ancient place of human occupation, offering significant remains of this period. The site was officially recognized and protected by a classification order in 1935, highlighting its heritage importance.

Prehistoric deposits in this area are often associated with hunting, gathering and craft activities, reflecting the lifestyle of nomadic or semi-nomadic populations of the time. These sites play a key role in understanding the first human occupations in Aquitaine, thanks in particular to the tools and other artifacts discovered. Their preservation allows us to study the techniques and methods of social organization of prehistoric communities.

The site was classified in 1935 to protect several parcels (cadastre B 69, 75, 76, 80, 82, 84, 94 to 98, 284, 286), thus ensuring the conservation of archaeological remains. Although the practical information on visits is limited, the site remains a point of interest for researchers and prehistoric archaeologists.
