Origin and history
The City of Prehistory, originally named the Regional Museum of Prehistory, was founded in 1988 by local prehistorians. Its aim was to centralize scattered collections from a century of research in Ardèche and the north of the Gard. This project aimed to preserve the regional prehistoric memory, building on excavations carried out on emblematic sites such as Orgnac 3 and the Baume de Ronze, which are now part of the Grand Site de France de l'Aven d'Orgnac.
In 2005, the museum became a departmental excavation depot, strengthening its scientific and heritage role. A complete renovation in 2014 gives it its current name and modernises its spaces. The museographic statement, validated by 88 researchers, combines extension and scientific rigour: it covers 350 000 years of history, from Prehistory to Iron Age (-600 years), with focus on local heritage, such as dolmens. Interactive tools (matquettes, touch tables, life-size animals) and free entertainment during school holidays make the place accessible to all.
Located near the gorges of the Ardèche, the museum is located in a classified territory of 390 hectares, including a natural cave and major archaeological areas. Its official address, the Orgnac d'Aven site in Orgnac-l Labeled Musée de France, it benefits from an approximate GPS location (precision estimated at 5/10), while remaining a reference point for research and mediation in prehistory.
