Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre de Guiclan, a Catholic religious building located in the Finistère, is distinguished by its emblematic 17th century architecture. Its gallery bell tower, decorated with lanterns, and Beaumanoir-style bedside illustrate the artistic influence of the Leon region. The south porch, dated from 1615, and the bedside, partly from the 15th to 16th century, bear witness to its complex history, mixing reconstruction and preservation of ancient elements.

The current structure is largely the result of the work carried out between 1878 and 1880 by architect Edouard Puyo, who reconstructs the building while preserving historical parts such as the south porch and the bedside. The latter, attributed to Claude Texier dit la Pensée, bears a bay dated 1688. The bell tower, completed in 1879, and the north gate (1855), reflect the additions of the 19th century, while the furniture, like the retable of Saint-Sebastien (sculpted wood, niches and canned columns), dates back to earlier periods.

Among the remarkable elements are the benigner of the south porch, the calvary, and the ancient statues, as well as the three bells, one of which, founded in 1767, bears an inscription mentioning Mathurin Hiacinthe Autheuil, Rector of Guiclan, and the godfathers/mothers Hervé L的Herrou and Marie Pouliquen. These details highlight the church's central role in local community and religious life, typical of Breton parishes.

The altarpiece of St. Sebastian, described in 1923, depicts the martyr surrounded by Roman archers, in an architectural ensemble decorated with angels, horns of abundance and heads of angels. This furniture, like the pulpit (more recent but of high quality), illustrates Breton sacred art and its evolution throughout the centuries. The church, partially classified as Historical Monuments in 1932 (chevet and porch), remains a major testimony of the Léonnais heritage.

The three-vessel Latin cross plan, the broken arch arcades, and the painted nave panel (red-ribed blue) reveal a synthesis of Gothic and classical styles. The large work, made of coated granite stone, contrasts with the cutting stone elements (west facade, bedside), highlighting the successive phases of construction. The current address, 4 Rue du Patronage, confirms its anchoring in the urban fabric of Guiclan.
