Origin and history

The bastion of Guise is a military building located in the city of Dijon, in Côte-d'Or, in the heart of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, it reflects the architectural and strategic evolutions of the period, marked by the introduction of bastions to strengthen urban defences.

The construction of the Guise bastion was supervised by Girolamo Bellarmato, an engineer and architect from Siena. He, a specialist in fortifications, brought his expertise to design this book, which is part of the context of the religious wars and political tensions of the sixteenth century.

The bastion of Guise was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 21 December 1944. This official recognition underscores its heritage importance and its role in Dijon's military history. Today, there remains a significant vestige of the city's fortifications, although its condition and accessibility are not detailed in the available sources.

Dijon, at that time, was a strategic city, commercial and political crossroads in Burgundy. Fortifications, such as the Guise stronghold, played a key role in protecting people and property, while symbolizing the power of local authorities. These works also reflected technical advances in artillery and urban defence.
