Cross called des Planches : inscription by order of 1 February 1929

Origin and history

La Croix dit des Planches is a historical monument located in the commune of Rolapont, Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, this cross is representative of the religious buildings of this period, often erected to mark a place of worship, a crossroads or a significant event for the local community. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 1 February 1929 underlines its heritage importance and its historical value.

In the 16th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region, of which Rolapont is part, was marked by a rural and agricultural society. The monumental crosses, like that of the Planches, played a central role in the daily life of the inhabitants. They served as spiritual landmarks, gathering places for processions or prayers, and often symbolized divine protection on lands and travellers.

These monuments also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in the social and cultural organization of the villages of the time.
