Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Hasparren, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, finds its origins in a Roman inscription discovered under the high altar, attesting to the importance of the village since ancient times. Founded in the 16th century, it was enlarged in 1661 to respond to population growth, and then radically redesigned in the 19th century. Between 1835 and 1859, the choir, the apse and chapels were rebuilt, while Charles Neighboring added wooden galleries on two levels, traditionally reserved for men until the 1970s.

Between 1879 and 1883, the building, then in poor condition, was completely rebuilt by keeping the stands, now supported by massive pillars and accessible by two monumental stairs. The church was consecrated in 1886 by Bishop Ducellier, then listed as historical monuments in 2014. Its architecture is inspired by the Romanesque style, with a Latin cross, an octagonal dome and a bell tower surmounted by a stone arrow.

The interior decor, dating from the late nineteenth century, includes stained glass windows by Charles-François Champigneulle (1882) and a fresco by Daniel Saubes (1895) depicting the baptism of Christ. The white marble altarpiece, dismantled in the 1960s, is replaced by a black marble altar, while the organ is resettled in the apse. Some missing elements, such as statues and stalls, still remain today.

The church marked local history by welcoming the baptisms of personalities such as Jean-Baptiste Lissarague (1876–1937), a missionary in Japan, and Bishop Michel Cartateguy (baptized in 1951), future archbishop of Niamey. These links illustrate his central role in Hasparren's religious and community life, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
