Origin and history
The donjon de la Motte, located in Saint-Gondon in the Loiret, is a medieval vestige of the eleventh century. This castle, built on an artificial motte, was surrounded by an enclosure housing outbuildings. Its polygonal dungeon, made of flint masonry and cut stone, served both as a seigneurial dwelling and as a defensive tower, with a crenellated terrace at the top. Access was limited to the floor, reflecting the defensive norms of the time.
Mentioned in the 9th century in the Miracula Sancti Benedicti in Adrevald, the site illustrates the evolution of local fortifications. The motte, central or lateral point of the enclosure, dominated the village and protected the adjoining buildings, whose remains remain. The dungeon has been a member of the historical monuments since 1971 and is a testament to medieval construction techniques and feudal organization in the Loire Valley.
The structure, a communal property, is distinguished by its polygonal plane and defensive system in height. The lack of access to the ground floor reinforced its security, while the floors housed the seigneurial family, guards and servants. The ruins, though partial, offer an overview of the châteaux à motte, characteristic of the 11th and 12th centuries in central France.
