Origin and history

The Carrefour de la Résistance, located in Lorris, Loiret, is an emblematic place of the French Resistance during the Second World War. This forest site was the scene of a bloody repression on 14 August 1944, when the German army surrounded the crossroads, arrested and shot 50 resistance fighters – guerrillas and civilians – before burning the four forest houses. These events followed the Battle of Chicamour two days earlier, when 150 guerrillas attacked an enemy convoy to seize vehicles.

The maquis of Lorris, led notably by Albin Chalandon and Marc O Despite the repression, the survivors then took part in the liberation of Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, Orléans and Paris. After the war, the site was renamed the Carrefour de la Résistance and preserved the ruins of the burnt houses, as well as a memorial with 60 cenotaphs. The sites were listed at the Historic Monuments in October 2023.

Among the notable figures, Albin Chalandon, seriously wounded twice, was saved by General Leclerc and decorated with the Legion of Honour for his role in the liberation of Paris. The other leader of the maquis, Colonel Marc O Today, the site symbolizes the sacrifice of the resistors and the memory of the deportations to the German camps (Oflags and Stalags) suffered by some members of the maquis.

The protected elements include the ruins of the houses of the Bordes and Lorris, the facades of the houses of Montereau and Ouzouer-sur-Loire, as well as the monument, cenotaphs and floors of the crossroads. This place of memory, located at the junction of the four municipalities, remains a poignant testimony of Nazi repression and the struggle for freedom.
