Origin and history

The church Saint-Laurent d'Arvieux, located in the Hautes-Alpes department, is a religious building built over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It has been classified as historic monuments since 1914, reflecting its heritage significance. Its architecture combines elements typical of these periods, with a three-span nave vaulted with ridges and an equally vaulted square choir.

The current nave, composed of three spans, and the square plane choir are arched, while the bell tower is surmounted by a stone arrow. The church has undergone major transformations over the centuries: it was badly damaged during the Wars of Religion, then restored in the seventeenth century. In 1683, the 16th century gate was raised, and in 1685, the nave was extended by a span, with a new vault and condemnation of the northern side chapels.

Between 1822 and 1832, a chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph was added for the brotherhood of penitents. In 1854, the vault of the choir was repainted by a certain Scalle, and in 1931 the roof was repainted in larch shingles. These changes illustrate the continuous evolution of the building, adapted to the religious needs and technical constraints of each era.

The church is located at 3515 Route de l'Izoard, 05350 Arvieux, and belongs to the municipality. It has been fully protected since its classification in 1914, making it a valuable testimony to Alpine religious architecture and its turbulent history.
