Origin and history
The cross of Rougentin is a calvary cross in granite, erected in the 16th century on the way to Quily, in the commune of Saint-Servant (Morbihan, Brittany). It is distinguished by its inverted lobed shape and its engraved base of the date "1878", corresponding to a restoration. This monolithic monument, of a cross-painting type, presents a decoration in bas-relief: Christ on one side crosses, and the Virgin with the Child crowned on the other. Its circular drum rests on a masonry base of rubble, surmounted by a base shaped like a pyramid trunk.
Ranked a historic monument since 6 March 1946, the Redntin cross illustrates Breton religious art of the Renaissance. Its carved frame, consisting of four segments of a hollow circle, frame the sacred representations. The cross is located about 2 km from the centre of Saint-Servant, on a road leading to Quily. Although its construction dates back to the 15th or 16th century, the date of 1878, engraved on the base, attests to a subsequent intervention aimed at its preservation.
This calvary, owned by the municipality, is part of the landscape of historical monuments of Morbihan. Its sober architecture and symbolic motifs reflect the importance of the road crosses in Breton culture, marking both places of devotion and landmarks for travellers. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (level 5/10), depending on available sources, but its official address is listed as "path to Quily, 56120 Saint-Servant".
