Church of Laas (Cd. C 91): inscription by decree of 12 July 1978
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Orens de Laas, located in Caillavet in Gers, is a monument whose origins date back to the twelfth century, with Romanesque remains still visible today. The semicircular bedside, along with the north and south walls, are the oldest parts of the building. These elements, typical of Romanesque architecture, are the only witnesses of the primitive structure, having survived the vicissitudes of history, including conflicts such as the Hundred Years' War or the Wars of Religion, which could explain the disappearance of the original vault.
The church's southern gate dates from 1783, marking a period of significant renovation or addition in the 18th century. Inside, a chrism adorns the tympanum of the ancient Romanesque door, now visible above the right lintel of the current entrance. This architectural detail, along with the seven Romanesque archatures of the bedside, underscore the historic and artistic significance of the site. The north side, on the other hand, is a more recent addition, reflecting subsequent developments in the building.
The church also houses a primitive altar, located in the bedside, which is covered with a flat panel, replacing the missing vault. The building, which has been listed as a Historic Monument since July 12, 1978, is now owned by the commune of Caillavest. Its present state and history are a valuable testimony to the architectural transformations and historical upheavals that have marked the region since the Middle Ages.
