Origin and history
The Saint Augustine church of Saint Augustine is a modest rural building erected in the early 13th century, characterized by a unique rectangular nave. This medieval heart, vaulted in wood from the beginning, preserves a castle of the late 15th century – a wooden structure ingenuity reproducing the ribs of a stone vault, a rare testimony of local craftsmanship.
In the 14th century, three side chapels were added, vaulted in Gothic style, marking a first extension of the building. The 15th century saw the construction of a gate under the bell tower, originally conceived as a porch, while the choir, once arched in masonry, collapsed and was capped in the 16th century. These transformations reflect the successive adaptations of the church to liturgical needs and structural hazards.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 25 September 1929, the church today belongs to the commune of Saint-Augustin (Corrèze). Its hybrid architecture, combining primitive Romanesque, Gothic and vernacular elements, illustrates the evolution of the small rural churches of Limousin between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. However, the accuracy of its location remains poor (level 6/10), according to available data.
