Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Aubin de Guérande, located in the heart of the medieval city surrounded by ramparts, is a major building in the diocese of Nantes. Its history dates back at least to the sixth century, according to tradition, with a first construction attributed to the Breton chief Waroch. The present building, classified as a Historical Monument since 1840, is the result of several construction campaigns: a late Romanesque nave (12th century), a Gothic choir and transept (14th-15th centuries), and a Renaissance façade completed in the 16th century. The monument suffered partial destruction, particularly during the War of Succession of Brittany (1342) and after a collapse in 1876, requiring major restorations.

In the Middle Ages, the college was the seat of a chapter of fourteen canons, led by a provost, and played a central role in the religious and social life of Gerande, prosperous through the salt trade. The treaty of Gerande (1365), temporarily ending the War of Succession, was sworn in on his great altar. Archaeological excavations revealed traces of a Merovingian place of worship, as well as re-used sarcophagus and Romanesque elements. Local legend attributes to Saint Aubin, bishop of Angers in the 6th century, a miracle that saved the Viking city in 919, strengthening its status as protector.

Major transformations include Gothic reconstruction after 1380, the addition of lateral chapels in the 16th century, and controversial restorations in the 19th century (tuffeau vaults, neo-Gothic arrow). In 2025, a 10-year restoration project (10 million euros) was launched to save the building, selected from the winners of the Heritage Lotto. The collegiate house houses glass windows from the 16th-17th centuries, a Jube dismantled in 1804 (now at the Cluny Museum), and five bells melted in 1885 by Amédée Bollée.

The exterior architecture reflects this complex history: a west facade with a géminé portal and bay window (XVI century), a prismatic bedside inspired by the flamboyant Gothic, and foothills decorated with pinacles. Inside, the Romanesque nave contrasts with the Gothic choir, while the crypt (14th century) and the chapter hall (15th century) testify to the liturgical and administrative functions of the chapter. The revolutionary sabotages (destruction of the statuary, melting of the bells) and storms (collapse of the campanile in 1705) marked its history.

The role of the canons was central: they managed the offices, musical education (school of psalette for young boys), and charitable works. Their expulsion during the Revolution was temporary, and the church regained its cult function in 1802. The excavations of 1899 under the choir confirmed the seniority of the site, with traces of occupation since the Merovingian era. Today, the collegiate church remains a symbol of the heritage of Gueranda, linked to both Breton history, the Duchy of Brittany, and medieval economic prosperity.
