Origin and history

The Saint-Eugénie church of Pontonx-sur-l'Adour is a Catholic church built in 1879 by architect Dupuy. It adopts a Latin cross shape and a Romano-Gothic architectural style, characteristic of its era. Its four-level bell tower culminates in a slender arrow, while its nave, divided into four spans, is separated from the sides by arched arches.

The interior decoration is marked by murals by Jean Rigaud. Among them, two major works, the Risen Jesus appearing at Marie-Madeleine and Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, painted in Paris in 1938, adorn the reverse of the bell tower. Eight other frescoes, performed in Urt, represent twelve Dutch and national saints, as well as four Virgins à l'Enfant, including Notre-Dame de Chartres and Notre-Dame de Maylis, arranged hierarchically towards the choir.

The blind triforium, with geminied openings, structures the upper part of the nave and choir. These architectural elements, combined with frescoes, reflect a desire to mix local religious tradition with broader artistic influences, typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
