Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pallais, located in Saint-Palais-de-Négrignac in Charente-Maritime, finds its origins in the 11th century as a priory-secure dependent on the abbey of Saint-Romain de Blaye. At the origin of Romanesque style (XII century), it was entirely rebuilt in the 15th century in a Gothic style, marked by a facade and a choir open with vast glass windows. This monument thus illustrates the transition between medieval and reborn periods, with various architectural influences.
In the 15th century, the building was profoundly redesigned, adopting Gothic features that still dominate today. Expansions took place during the Renaissance, enriching its heritage. Some minor modifications were also made in the 18th century, without altering its main style. The church is finally listed as historical monuments by order of 5 December 2000, recognizing its heritage value.
The church Saint-Pallais embodies local religious history, linked to the Abbey of Saint-Romain-de-Blaye (Gironde). Its architecture, combining Gothic and Renaissance, reflects the artistic and spiritual evolutions of the region. Owned by the commune, it remains an emblematic place of the Charente-Maritime heritage, open to discovery.
