Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Reignac, classified as a Historic Monument in 1970, presents a cruciform plan with an apsidiole on the south side. Its construction spans several centuries: the heart of the building dates back to the 12th century, while major changes took place in the 15th and 16th centuries, as attested to by an arcade of the nave dated 1538. The north side, rebuilt in the 16th century, bears a dogive cross, and an inscription of 1546 appears above the door of the sacristy. The octagonal bell tower, pierced with windows and equipped with a covered round road, as well as the three-gate facade surmounted by carved archatures (representing saints and monstrous figures), illustrate the architectural richness of the building.
Originally, the church depended on the priory-curtain of Reignac, itself attached to the Abbey of Lesterps. A second vessel was joined to the north in the 15th and 16th centuries, during which time the building underwent various modifications. In the 18th century, a presbytery was added to the south, completing the whole. The cul-de-four and the cupola on pendants bear witness to the varied stylistic influences that marked its evolution. The protected elements, including the church itself (Cadastre F 714), underline its heritage importance.
The location of the church, in Reignac, Charente, New Aquitaine, is documented with an accuracy deemed satisfactory (level 7/10). Owned by the commune, the building embodies both a historical place of worship and a witness to the architectural transformations that occurred between the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its classification in 1970 devotes its artistic and historical value, notably through its preserved medieval sculptures and structures.
