Origin and history
Saint-Sulpice Church is a religious building located in the heart of Maisoncelles-en-Brie, a rural commune of Seine-et-Marne in Île-de-France. It is dedicated to Sulpice le Pieux and illustrates the typical architecture of the medieval rural churches of the region. Its choir, built in the early 13th century, and its portal, erected in the 16th century, bear witness to its architectural evolution throughout the centuries.
The nave of the church was rebuilt in the late seventeenth century after the partial collapse of its vaults. The bell tower was completely rebuilt in 1890. These transformations reflect the structural and aesthetic needs of different eras. The building was added to the "Heritage of Regional Interest" label on November 21, 2018, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
The church houses a remarkable movable heritage, protected as historical monuments. Among the notable elements are an altar with tabernacle, a path of the cross, a confessional, and religious statues such as those of Saint John and the Virgin. Two bas-reliefs representing scenes of Christ's life were even loaned to the Louvre Museum in 2009 for an exhibition dedicated to the first retables, highlighting their artistic and historical value.
