Origin and history
The Saint-Sulpice church of Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois, located in the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a religious building built mainly in the 12th century. However, it preserves traces of a choir possibly dating from the 11th century, as well as changes made in the 14th and 15th centuries, especially in the bedside and vaults. The fortified elements, added in the second half of the 14th century, testify to the defensive needs of the period.
Before 1374, this church was home to the seat of the archiprire of Bénévent, stressing its religious and administrative importance in the region. The monument underwent restorations in the 19th century, before being included in the inventory of historical monuments in 1994. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque influences and subsequent adaptations, reflecting a rich and complex history.
The building, owned by the municipality, includes protected elements such as the church itself and the soil of the former adjacent parcel. Its inscription in 1994 preserved an emblematic Limousin heritage, marked by centuries of religious and local history. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its central role in the Creuse cultural landscape.
