Origin and history

La Sainte-Fontaine, also known as the Saint Fontaine Oratory, is a fountain located in Flaxieu, in the department of Ain in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. Its exact origin remains uncertain, although assumptions suggest a Gallo-Roman foundation. The water of this fountain was once considered to have special virtues, as attests an inscription on the monument.

The present monument was built at the initiative of Aymon de Montfalcon, a local influential figure. In 1986, the fountain was restored to preserve its state. The Saint Fontaine is today the property of the municipality of Flaxieu and remains an architectural and cultural testimony of the late medieval period in the region.

Its designation as historic monuments in 1926 underscores its heritage importance. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected site and its precise location in the Ain, near Bourg-en-Bresse. The fountain is located at approximately 5034 Precinte Pommont, in the hamlet of En Pommont.
