Origin and history
The church of the Tromps of Saint-Priest, dedicated to Saint Martin-de-Brive, dates from the 4th quarter of the 13th century. It belonged to the former Tromp parish, now extinct. After a fire in 1818, only architectural elements were saved: its gate and a vaulted arch, mounted in the south wall of the present parish church of Saint-Priest. These remains testify to the late Romanesque or primitive Gothic art of the region.
The gate and the vault fall were classified as Historic Monuments by order of August 16, 1927, recognizing their heritage value. The precise location of the old church remains uncertain (estimated precision at 5/10), but the preserved elements are today owned by the municipality. There is no information on whether the site is open to visitors or reassigned (rent, guest rooms).
The fire of 1818 marked the end of the original building, whose previous history remains poorly documented. The current, though fragmentary, remains offer an overview of 13th century rural religious architecture in Limousin (now New Aquitaine). Their integration into the parish church of Saint-Priest underlines a desire to preserve in situ, typical of 19th century practices.
