Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Médard-Lagarénie d'Issepts, located in the Lot in Occitanie, has its origins in a donation of 982. Ranulphe, Viscount of Aubusson, then gave up the land of Lagarénie to the monastery of Notre-Dame-des-Artels de Fons, dependent on the abbey of Saint-Sauveur de Figeac. A first Romanesque chapel was built in the 11th century, with a transept partially destroyed when the nave was enlarged before the end of the same century. The nave, initially covered with a ceiling, is integrated into a priory in the 12th century.
In the 18th century, the facade was transformed with the addition of pilasters and a gable in degrees forming a bell tower. The current gate dates back to 1833, while the nave is arched in the middle of the hanger with briquettes in 1830. These major changes of the 19th century partially redefine the original Romanesque aspect. The chapel, a communal property, was declared a historical monument in 1978 after centuries of architectural evolution.
The building is characterized by a single vessel ending in semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four. The choir's capitals, decorated with stylized motifs (stripes or foliage), testify to local Romanesque art. Two rooms adjacent to the south, later added, serve as sacristy. Restorations in 2003 preserved this Quercy heritage, combining medieval heritage and modern adaptations.
The chapel illustrates the religious history of Quercy, linked to Benedictine abbeys like Figeac. Its architecture reflects the transitions between primitive novel and later developments, while remaining anchored in the rural landscape of Lotois. Archivistic sources and excavations confirm his role as a dependent priory, then parish church after the Revolution.
