Origin and history
The Saint-Eusèbe church of Saint-Usuge is an emblematic religious building of the Bresse, built in bricks and marked by an original architecture. Its northern lateral chapel, known as the "Chambre de Montcony", dates back to the 14th century, while the choir and the first part of the nave date from the 16th century. The bell tower and the first two spans of the nave, with a dome surmounted by a lantern, were added in the 18th century.
The church consists of a single nave dogives vaulted, flanked by side chapels, and ends with a bedside with cut strips. Its entrance is made by the bell tower-porch, an architectural peculiarity shared with other churches in the region. Inside, a painting depicts Saint Eusebius, patron saint of the church, surrounded by angels, while an 18th-century golden wooden statue, classified as a historical monument in 2021, is preserved in the presbytery.
The building, originally attached to the diocese of Besançon, now belongs to the diocese of Autun and the parish of Saint Peter in Louhannais. There remains an active Catholic place of worship, bearing witness to the religious and architectural history of the Burgundy Bresse. Its furniture and structure reflect the stylistic and spiritual evolutions of the region over centuries.
