Origin and history
The Lavoir de Saint-Tropez, located in the municipality of the same name in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a historic monument built during the 19th century. This type of building, typical of French villages, played a central role in the social and domestic life of the inhabitants, serving as a place of laundry and meeting for the women of the village. Its architecture reflects the practical needs of the time, while integrating aesthetic elements specific to the region.
The wash-house project was initiated at the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, with a plan drawn up in 1859 by architect Vasserot. Construction was completed in 1861, as indicated by an inscription on the building. This wash, accompanied by its outdoor fountain, was inscribed as a historical monument by decree of 9 July 1981, thus recognizing its heritage importance. Today, there remains a testimony of the community organization and hygiene traditions of the past.
The location of the washhouse, at 83990 Saint-Tropez, rue du Lavoir, is documented in the Mérimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5 of 10). The building belongs to the municipality and its current condition, whether it is open to visit or not, is not specified in the available sources. Its architecture and history make it a landmark of local heritage, linked to the urban and social evolution of Saint-Tropez in the 19th century.
