Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Saffré is a Catholic religious building located in the Loire-Atlantique department in the Pays de la Loire region. It is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, and its most remarkable element is an engraved sundial in slate dating from 1736, classified as an object in 1984. This detail shows the importance of astronomical instruments in places of worship of the time.

The current church was built between 1857 and 1874, led by Blandin according to the plans of architects Faucher and Boismen. Funded by the council of manufacture and the gifts of parishioners, it was inaugurated solemnly: the first stone was blessed in 1857 by Reverend Father Lavigne, and the building was consecrated in 1880 by Jules-François Le Coq, then Bishop of Nantes. These dates mark key milestones in its recent history, reflecting local community and religious commitment.

The church is part of the 19th century Christian architectural landscape, a period marked in France by a revival of religious constructions. In Saffré, as in many rural communities, the parish church plays a central role in social and spiritual life, serving as a place for gathering, prayer and collective celebrations. Its style and history illustrate the dynamics of reconstruction and modernization of the cultural buildings of the time.
