Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Garat is a religious building built in the 4th quarter of the 12th century, located in the commune of Garat, Charente (department 16). This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its western facade, protected by a decree of inscription in 1926. Its official address, according to the Mérimée base, is 16410 Garat, with an approximate location at 144 Rue du Dr. The property belongs to the municipality.
At that time, parish churches like Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for local decisions and religious holidays. The Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, was marked by agrarian economy and limited exchanges, where the Church was a major social and political institution. Romanesque architecture, typical of the 12th century, reflected both local know-how and regional influences.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, specify that only the western facade has been legally protected since 1926. No additional information is provided on any interior developments, historical figures related to its construction, or significant events taking place there. The current GPS location is considered fair accuracy (note 5/10), and a photo licensed under Creative Commons (credit: Jack ma) illustrates the monument.
