Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre d'Ancenis, located in the commune of Ancenis-Saint-Géréon in Loire-Atlantique, is a religious building whose origins date back to the thirteenth century. Its architecture combines several periods: the base of its bell tower, of Gallo-Roman origin, supports a 15th century narthex, while the "clock tower" dates from the 19th century. The nave and apse, built in the 16th and 17th centuries respectively, open to the lower sides by arches of full hangar carried by massive columns. The transept, the only vaulted stone space, features Plantagenet-style pendant keys, characteristic of the late 15th century.
The church's stained glass windows, designed by Raphaël Lardeur in 1946, bring a modern artistic touch to this historic monument. The bell tower, which is the main entrance, illustrates the superposition of styles throughout the centuries, from antiquity to contemporary times. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of January 7, 1926, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.
The Saint-Pierre church is part of a local religious complex including other buildings such as the Saint-Géréon church or the Notre-Dame-de-la-Déliverance chapel. Its history reflects the architectural and cultural developments of the region, from its medieval foundations to its recent developments. The monument, owned by the commune, remains a living testimony to the religious and historical heritage of the Pays de la Loire.
