Origin and history
The Moulin de la Ramée is a windmill located in the commune of Saint-Viaud, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built probably in 1567, as indicated by a date engraved above a marteled coat of arms on the lintel of its southern door, it is part of the architectural tradition of the mills of the Brittany furrow and the country of Guérande, with a talute base characteristic of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its two-storey granite belloon structure, topped by a conical roof in chestnut shingles, bears witness to this period.
The mill operated until the middle of the 20th century, before its activity ceased. Its roof was restored around 1980, and although its wings have disappeared, its internal mechanisms, including a pair of wheels, remain intact. Listed as historical monuments by order of 16 May 1979, it represents a preserved industrial and architectural heritage, typical of the mills of the region.
The Ramée mill is distinguished by its enlargement at the base, forming an overflowing seat, a constructive characteristic frequent in the mills of this period in Brittany and in the country of Guérande. Today, it is a material testimony of rural history and traditional milling techniques, although its access and conditions of visit are not specified in available sources.
