Origin and history

The church Saint-Léger de Marieux is a religious building located in the centre of the village of Marieux, in the department of the Somme, in the Hauts-de-France region. It embodies the neo-classical architecture of the early 19th century, marked by a great sobriety and a parallelepipedic structure. Built in limestone, its blind facade is rhythmized by a portal surmounted by a niche housing a statue of Saint Léger, patron saint of the church. A quadrangular bell tower, with a cross, dominates the whole, while a clock adorns the upper part of the facade, under a triangular pediment.

The history of the present church dates back to 1828, when it was built. Although there are no historical elements in the available sources, today it retains several objects classified as historical monuments as objects. Among them is a statue of the Virgin with the Child made of 16th century wood, two vases in 18th century earthenware, and a monumental painting, Christ on the Cross, attributed to Jean Aubéry or Henri Lehmann and his students. This table, registered in 2021, was the subject of a restoration campaign because of its degraded state, illustrating the attention paid to the preservation of this heritage.

The interior of the church, illuminated by small lateral bays and windows, also houses a 19th century silver bronze kiss of peace. These elements reflect both local piety and the artistic influence of past times. The building, by its style and works, bears witness to the evolution of religious practices and aesthetic tastes in the 19th century Picardie, while anchoring Marieux in a lasting cultural and spiritual heritage.
