Origin and history
The church Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Saint-Cyr, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, was built at the end of the 15th century. Today, only the choir remains, covered with a vault on a dogives cross, witness to its late Gothic architecture. The building is dedicated to St.Cyr and St.Julitte, a particularity that he shares with three other churches in the diocese of Autun.
In the 18th century, the church underwent major changes: the nave was rebuilt and flanked by two chapels, while a bell tower was erected. The choir was then decorated with a mural, signed by a certain Defauze and dated 1735, although this mural is now severely degraded. An engraved date (1784) at the base of the bell tower also attests to this work.
Interventions continued in the 19th and 20th centuries: the false vault in the middle of the nave was redone in 1988, and the facades were restored in 1998. The church houses remarkable furniture, including a 14th century crucifix, a Child's Virgin and an 18th century Pietà (classified as Historical Monuments in 2002), as well as a statue of Saint Barbe. Since 2001, the building has been protected under Historic Monuments.
Today, the church of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte remains an active Catholic place of worship, attached to the parish of Saint-Martin-entre-Saône-et-Grosne. Its history reflects the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
