Church: registration by decree of 28 January 1927
Origin and history
The church of the Nativity-de-la-Sainte-Vierge, located in Villars-les-Dombes in the department of Ain, is a historic monument registered since 28 January 1927. It presents various architectural elements, bearing witness to several epochs, including Romanesque traces on the southern wall of the nave, such as arched openings and committed columns decorated with capitals.
The apse and chapels illustrate Gothic and Renaissance styles, while the bell tower was rebuilt in 1834. In 1895, partial restoration works concerned roofs, sacristy and triumphant arch. Two passages known as "Berrichons", rare in the region, open onto the nave, adding a notable architectural peculiarity.
Mentioned in 1250, this church reflects the architectural and religious evolution of the region. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, while recalling its central role in the community life of Villars-les-Dombes throughout the centuries.
