Origin and history

The church of the Nativity-de-la-Sainte-Vierge of Bénac was built shortly after the foundation of the priory in the 11th century, although its main construction dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. It adopted a Latin cross plan, characteristic of Benedictine churches, and was deeply marked by the wars of Religion. After these conflicts, Protestants took part in its restoration, illustrating the tensions and religious reconciliations of the time.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the addition of an interior decor, enriching the building with Baroque or classical elements. Although the modern bell tower is excluded from protection, the church itself was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 July 1972. Its location in Bénac, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, makes it an architectural witness to the religious and social history of Occitanie.

Owned by the municipality, the church retains a heritage value linked to its monastic origin and successive transformations. Its present state, combining medieval traces and additions of Modern Times, reflects the cultural and religious evolutions of the region. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "a priori satisfactory", based on available data.
