The facades and roofs as well as the cellar (Box AB 257): inscription by decree of 31 July 2001
Origin and history
The Santiago de Gallargues Hospital is an example of medieval Gothic civil architecture, located in the Gard department. This monument has retained its exterior elevations (façades and roofs) as well as its vaulted cellar room, characteristic of the medieval period. It shows the importance of civilian buildings in the small communes of Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie) during the Middle Ages.
Ranked a historic monument in 2001, the Saint-Jacques Hospital illustrates the preserved architectural heritage of the region. The protected elements include facades, roofs and cellar, according to the decree of 31 July 2001. Although little documented, this type of building reflects the social and hospital practices of the time, often linked to the reception of pilgrims or the poorest.
The precise location of the Saint-Jacques hospital is attested at 1 rue de la Bonnette-Rouge in Gallargues-le-Montieux, in the Gard. Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments highlights its heritage value, while offering an overview of the medieval urban planning of this Occitan municipality. No additional information is available on its specific history or founders.
