Origin and history

The Saint-Nizier chapel of Saint-Martin-d'Uriage, located in the Isère department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, was built in 1675 to replace the old church with crypt of the Priory of Saint-Nizier. This religious monument, now partially classified as historical monuments, bears witness to the period's rustic Baroque architecture. Its interior is decorated with painted decorations and furniture by stucco imitating marble, while its facade features an oculus above the front door.

The chapel houses two paintings dating from 1757, depicting its patron saint Saint-Nizier and Saint-Denis. Its square bell tower, integrated with the rectangular nave, and its Sully lime, planted on the parvis, add to its historical character. The building was listed as historic monuments on 19 March 1991, especially for its murals and its major altar, now owned by the commune.

Sully's linden, remarkable by its circumference of 5.60 metres measured at 1.30 metres in height, is a notable plant element of the site. The chapel, a former parish church in the village of Saint-Nizier, illustrates the importance of places of worship in the social and religious organization of the rural communities of the Isère in the seventeenth century. Its interior decor and furniture reflect the Baroque artistic influences adapted to a more modest local context.
