Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Préaux, located in the Mayenne department in Pays de la Loire, is a Catholic building dating back to the 11th century. It was completely rebuilt between 1856 and 1869 under the leadership of Pierre Huaumé, parish priest until 1884. This project kept the proportions of the old church, while integrating more recent architectural elements, such as a 16th century chapel and a second added by the Bois-Robert family.

Prior to this reconstruction, the church had a simple nave and a Romanesque choir, partially redesigned in the 18th century. Earlier work was attested by parish registers, including the reconstruction of the choir in 1748, the installation of benches between 1774 and 1776, and the laying of bells in 1608 and 1754. The painted panels of the eighteenth century, representing biblical scenes, as well as a statue of Saint Sebastian (1774-1776) donated by M. de Villeneuve, testify to his rich interior heritage.

The chapel of the castle, dating from the beginning of the sixteenth century, was integrated into the building during the transformations. An engraved stone embedded in the wall attests to this period. The present church, classified as a Historical Monument since 2000, also retains liturgical furniture and painted decoration from the second half of the 19th century, reflecting the artistic and religious evolutions of the period.

Historical sources, such as Abbé Angot's notes (1884) and parish archives, document successive repairs to the primitive building. These elements underline the importance of the church in local life, both spiritually and architecturally, from the Middle Ages to its modern renovation.

Today, the Church of Saint Martin remains a remarkable example of a religious building that combined medieval heritage and transformations of the 19th and 18th centuries, while preserving decorative elements and furniture of various periods.
