Origin and history

Saint-Martin de Monclaris Church is a Catholic church located in the Gironde department, in the commune of Sigalens, New Aquitaine. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it underwent restorations around 1680 and 1822, although its nave collapsed. The building has been listed as a historical monument since 1987 for its facades, its roof, the interior decoration of the choir, as well as the tomb of Father Bertrand François Castera, former chaplain of Louis XVI and parish priest around 1830.

The place called Monclaris, where the church is located, is accessible from the village of Sigalens via the departmental road D124, then a vicinal road. This isolated site reflects the importance of rural churches in medieval religious and social organization, often linked to local figures such as Father Castera, whose grave bears witness to his historical role.

The protected elements specifically include the facades, the roof of the choir, its interior decoration, as well as the adjacent cemetery, with the tomb of Father Castera. These protections highlight the heritage value of the building, despite its partial condition. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a historical monument and its anchor in the girondin religious landscape.
