Origin and history

The Saint Martin church, located in Brunet in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is dedicated to Saint Martin. It replaces an old parish church, disused and sold to private individuals. The present building, built in the 19th century, belongs to the commune since the law of 1905 and depends on the diocese of Digne. Today it is used for weddings and funerals, while sheltering the relics of Saint Christine since 1713.

The history of this church dates back to its origin as a priory chapel linked to Montmajour Abbey, before passing under the authority of Riez Cathedral in 1204. The old church, which had become inadequate, was replaced by the present building, rectangular with a flat bedside and an adjacent sacristy. Its bell tower, typical of the region, houses a bell dated 1838.

Architecturally, the Saint Martin church illustrates the Provencal Romanesque style, sober and functional. Its bell tower-wall, integrated into the façade, is a common feature in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, where resources and defensive needs influenced construction. The building, the only remaining place of worship in Brunet, bears witness to the religious and social evolution of this rural commune since the Middle Ages.
