Calvary: registration by order of 20 May 1927
Origin and history
The Calvary of La Truchère is a cemetery cross erected in the 16th century, located on the main square of the village. This monument, typical of Renaissance religious art, marks the sacred space of the cemetery and bears witness to the collective piety of the period. Its central location in the village highlights its symbolic importance to the local community, serving as both a spiritual landmark and a gathering place.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 20 May 1927, this calvary illustrates the attention paid to the rural religious heritage in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Official protection reflects its heritage value, both architecturally and historically. Although the archives do not specify the exact circumstances of its construction, its style and location suggest a major role in the social and religious life of the village in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The Saône-et-Loire region, to which La Truchère belongs, was then marked by a mainly agricultural and artisanal economy. Calvary, often erected near churches or cemeteries, served as support for popular devotion and recalled Christian teachings. Their presence in the public space also strengthened community cohesion around shared values, in a context where the Church played a central role in the organisation of daily life.
