Origin and history

The Gabrielle-Dorziat Theatre in Épernay, built in the early 20th century in the Marne, is an emblematic building of the city. It replaces a former theatre located at the same location and pays tribute to the local actress Gabrielle Dorziat. This Italian-style theatre, of Louis XV style, is distinguished by its careful decoration, made by several renowned artists.

The facade of the theatre is decorated with a work by the Sparnacian sculptor Joseph Ascoli, entitled The Champagne vine inspired the Theatrical Art, which highlights the link between local wine heritage and theatrical culture. Inside, sculptor Georges Trugard and painter Georges Clairin also contributed to the decoration, adding a refined artistic dimension to the building.

Located in the centre of Épernay, between the Hôtel de Ville, the Notre-Dame church and the train station, the theatre was listed as a historical monument in 1988. It was designed by architect Stanislas Loison and belongs to the municipality. Its architecture and history make it a major cultural place in the Grand Est region, reflecting both the artistic and wine heritage of Champagne.

Theatre is a representative example of early 20th century theatre architecture, mixing classical and local influences. Its designation as a historic monument in 1988 reflects its heritage value and its importance in the French cultural landscape.
