The Viscounts of Limoges mentioned without precision.
Origin and history
The tower of Echizadour, located in Saint-Méard in New Aquitaine, is an 11th century vestige. It was part of a defensive system linked to the feudal possessions of the Viscounts of Limoges. This castle, at the edge of the Viscounts of Limoges and Comborn, is now reduced to a square tower of 24 meters high, built of granite bells. A geminied bay, whose haze has disappeared, adorns its western facade, bearing witness to its medieval architecture.
The tower was integrated into a defensive belt protecting the lands of the Viscounts of Limoges. Its square plan and granite construction reflect the military techniques of the time. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1955, it illustrates the strategic importance of fortifications at the borders of the feudal territories of Limousin.
There is no specific information on its exact use or occupants, but its location at the edge of the viscounts suggests a monitoring and control role. The current, though partial, remains provide an overview of 11th century military constructions in this region.
